Technical Overmoulding Services

Inoplas Technology provides precision overmoulding for OEMs that need to combine plastics with cables, connectors, electronic assemblies, metal inserts or other moulded components. Based in Dorset, UK, we support projects from early design and tooling through to low and high volume production, assembly and testing.

Overmoulding is extensively used in many industrial sectors including Industrial Control, Military, Automotive, Marine, Medical, Sensors and Audio and Inoplas has taken a number of our customers through the design and specification process to produce very high quality overmouldings for numerous applications. We like nothing better than to see a customer’s eyes light up when we show them how they can reduce costs and improve function by harnessing our skills.

Overmoulding PCBs, sensors and electronic components Electronic overmoulding is a particular area of experience for Inoplas. PCBs, sensors, RFID devices and other electronic assemblies can be encapsulated or partially overmoulded to provide mechanical support, insulation and protection from moisture, dust, vibration and impact. The challenge is controlling what happens during moulding. Sensitive components can be exposed to heat, injection pressure and mechanical forces, so tool design, gate position, polymer flow, component support and processing conditions all matter.
We also operate a dedicated ESD-controlled cell for handling, soldering and preparing electrostatic-sensitive components before moulding and also a Class VII cleanroom for medical or other applications. Where a specified level of ingress protection is required, the complete product must be designed and validated for that requirement. Overmoulding can form an important part of the sealing strategy but does not, by itself, guarantee an IP rating. Inoplas can also discuss low-pressure moulding, potting and other encapsulation methods where lower processing forces, component sensitivity, production volume or economics make an alternative process more appropriate.

Cable and connector overmoulding

Inoplas has extensive experience in overmoulding cables, connectors, pins and terminations. A correctly designed overmould can secure the cable, protect soldered or crimped connections and create flexible strain relief where the cable enters a connector or housing.

Because we also manufacture bespoke cable assemblies in-house, projects can combine cutting, stripping, crimping, soldering, testing and overmoulding within one manufacturing supply chain reducing secondary assembly, handling and the number of suppliers involved in your finished product.

CASE STUDY

In July 2014 Inoplas developed the Moover cow slipper for a customer. The slipper is designed for dairy cows, who have a problem in one of their hoof “claws”. The slipper allows the infected “claw” to be raised off the ground and heal quickly.
